DESCRIPTION: This auction is for TSR War of the Wizards Counters 1975 (Set).

This comes from the personal collection of Timothy "Ollie" Cahoon!

The Collector's Trove has been authorized to auction this and hundreds of other items from the collection of Timothy "Ollie" Cahoon. These items were acquired during Ollie’s amateur and professional involvement with war games, role playing games, strategy games, and board games, several years of that time spent as an employee of TSR, the company that founded the role playing game industry.

Each numbered lot comes with its own unique Certificate of Authenticity personally signed by Tim Cahoon.

Ollie started his war gaming career at Eastern Michigan University in 1975. His roommate introduced him to war gaming with Avalon Hill's Stalingrad and Ollie was hooked! Soon after, he met another gamer who told him about an unusual game being run by his boss. The game was Dungeons & Dragons and the fellow running it was none other than Will Niebling. Eventually, Ollie and Will were regulars at local conventions, such as MichiCon, WinterCon, and Origins.

By the late 1970s Ollie was a veteran player and had played and DMed some of the most legendary Wintercon tournaments: Lost Caverns of Tsojconth 1976, Quest for the Fazzlewood 1978, Ghost Tower of Inverness 1979, and Dwarven Rite of Oovra Droom (Later Role-Aids Dwarves). He and Will Niebling regularly visited with Gary Gygax at WinterCon, MichiCon, and Gen Con. Eventually, Will accepted a job with TSR in the Fall of 1979 and Ollie came along with him.

Ollie started off working in TSR's legendary Dungeon Hobby Shop Mail Order but soon transferred to computer department, since he was pursuing a degree in computer science while in college. The department was headed up by Al Bucholz. Kevin Blume had bought TSR's Burroughs B800 computer from Al and then hired him to run the computer department. Diane Sutherland ran the 1st shift and Ollie worked the 2nd shift, running programs, printing reports for the business-side of TSR, backing-up data, and writing programs.

When TSR upgraded their system a year later to a new HP3000, it sat there for a while and Ollie played around with it until he taught himself to operate it. After the departure of Diane Sutherland from the department, Ollie became 1st shift. When Al and Ollie brought in the 4th generation COGNOS language they programmed Gen Con registration so it could be viewed online internally within TSR. This would pave the way for total computerization of Gen Con registration!

In addition to his duties with TSR computer department Ollie's long time gaming experience put him in a position to be a game master at Michicon, Wintercon, Gen Con, Gen Con East, and Winter Fantasy. He helped run many of the elimination and preliminary rounds of numerous tournaments, including Dwellers of the Forbidden City by Zeb Cook 1980, Investigation of Hydell by Frank Mentzer 1981, The Druid's Tower by Harold Johnson and Allen Hammack 1982, Light on Quest Mountain by Jim Ward 1983, and many more RPGA and open tournaments throughout the early 80s.

Tim’s involvement in the game industry reaches back into the golden age of role-playing games and the height of TSR's success. Quite a legacy indeed!

Now you have a chance to be the curator of a piece of this legacy! We look forward to seeing your bids!

Good luck!

The Collector's Trove

Wear refers to varying amounts of rubbing wear (including faint scratches). Creases refers to bends in the material that leave visible wrinkles or break the surface of a colored area to reveal white beneath. Rounding refers to the bumping, bending, and wear of corners that rounds or deforms them. Fraying refers to the roughing up that occurs at edges, corners, and along spine areas of books. Dirtiness refers to color having rubbed off of other product, various specks, spots, stains, and or yellowing from handling (like yellowed areas at the edge of book pages from thumbing through them). Bumping refers to various nicks, scuffs, dents, score marks, and impressions. Yellowing refers to the discoloration of materials due to age.

Any exceptional damage or degradation that goes beyond normal wear (deep cuts, larger scuffs, larger or darker stains, heavier areas of writing impressions or score marks, writing, highlighting, stickers, sticker residue, laminating, severe creases, splitting, etc.), printing errors, or missing parts are detailed separately.

Tiny indicates less than 1/8 inch, small indicates less than 1/4 inch, medium, less than 1 inch, and large, greater than 1 inch. Scoring refers to an impression left by a hard point, scratches and cuts actually break the surface, and scuffs peel the surface material off or push it aside. Shrink-wrap and its condition are indicated separately and do not affect grade. Hardcover books are graded using the above table but creases typically don't apply.
