A refined elegance of line, sophisitication and exquisite workmanship are perhaps some of the qualities associated with the Art Deco style which culminated in 1925 at the Paris Exposition Universelle des Arts Decoratifs at Industriels Modernes. Its origins, however, date back to the early 1900s when such groups as the Wiener Werkstatte, Deutscher Werkbund and De Stijl were founded throughout Europe in reaction to the obsessive curves and ornamentation of Art Nouveau.

In this book, the author presents an excellent pictorial survey of the development of the style in France stressing the contemporary movements abroad as well as general trends in painting, theatre design and fashion. The well-illustrated sections on furniture, architecture and the applied arts cover both the work of the 'traditionalists' and the 'modernists' and explain the ideology behind each.

Translated for the first time into English, this book portrays the fascinating period which witnessed the last of taditional French design and the genesis of the 'new' style that was to influence the decades to come - leaving in its wake a rich legacy of exquisitely crafted Art Deco workmanship.
