Vintage Records For Sale

I’m selling my private stock of new and unplayed vintage records.

These records are at least 25 years old and many of them are original pressings and collectables.

Due to the success of the CD In the late 80’s and early 90’s records were produced only in small batches. Many of them have never been reissued.

I’m the first owner of these records and I keep a history file of each of them.

These records are Still Sealed and Near Mint copies that have never been played.

Each record comes with a detailed description of the condition of the record together with multiple pictures. I do not sell records graded less than VG+ (Very Good Plus). I also tend to underrate my records which means I do not use M (Mint) as a grade (see below).

I use the Goldmine Grading Standard what is considered to be the standard for record collectors worldwide. Occasionally I use the grading EX (Excellent), which is in use with many other sellers. EX is regarded to be better as VG+ but not as good as NM or M-. (see below).

If you still have questions or want more info about a specific record, please contact me.

MINT (M)
These are absolutely perfect in every way. Often rumoured but rarely seen, Mint should never be used as a grade unless more than one person agrees that the record or sleeve truly is in this condition. There is no set percentage of the Near Mint value these can bring; it is best negotiated between buyer and seller.

NEAR MINT (NM OR M-)
A good description of a NM record is “it looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time.” In other words, it’s nearly perfect. Many dealers won’t use a grade higher than this, implying (perhaps correctly) that no record or sleeve is ever truly perfect.

NM records are shiny, with no visible defects. Writing, stickers or other markings cannot appear on the label, nor can any “spindle marks” from someone trying to blindly put the record on the turntable. Major factory defects also must be absent; a record and label obviously pressed off center is not Near Mint. If played, it will do so with no surface noise. (NM records don’t have to be “never played”; a record used on an excellent turntable can remain NM after many plays if the disc is properly cared for.)

NM covers are free of creases, ring wear and seam splits of any kind.

VERY GOOD PLUS [VG+]

Shows some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK.

The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but is should be barely noticeable. The center hole is not misshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turn-up corners, or a slight seam-split. An LP jacket may have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount.

In general, if not for a couple of minor things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus record highly acceptable.

The Goldmine Grading Scale

Mint | Near Mint | Very Good Plus | Very Good | Good/Good Plus | Poor/Fair

Mint [M]: Absolutely perfect in every way - certainly never played, possibly even still sealed. (More on still sealed below). Should be used sparingly as a grade, if at all.

Near Mint [NM or M-]: A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record shows no obvious sign of wear. A 45 rpm sleeve has no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.

An LP jacket has no creases, folds, seam splits or any other noticeable similar defect. No cut-out holes, either. And of course, the same is true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves, and the like. Basically, Near Mint looks as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink wrap.

Very Good Plus [VG+]: Shows some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK.

Very Good [VG]: Many of the defects found in a VG+ record are more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during the song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.

Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.

Good [G], Good Plus [G+]: Good does not mean bad! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear.

A jacket or sleeve has seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object. If it's a common item, you'll probably find another copy in better shape eventually. Pass it up. But if it's something you have been seeking for years, and the price is right, get it.

Poor [P], Fair [F]: The record is cracked, badly warped, and won't play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve is water damaged, split on all three seams and heavily marred by wear and/or writing. The LP jacket barely keeps the LP inside it. Inner sleeves are fully seam split, and written upon.

Except for impossibly rare records otherwise unattainable, records in this condition should be bought or sold for no more than a few cents each.

Handling & Shipping

Each record is taken out of its inner sleeve and is placed in a brand new Nagaoka Anti-static Record Sleeve. I place the record on top of the outer sleeve to prevent damage during transport. This package is then placed inside a heavy PE outer sleeve for extra protection. Please note that Still Sealed (SS) records come ‘as is’ as their content has not been checked and is unknown until opened.

The whole is wrapped in protection foil and shipped in a professional wrap round LP mailer box (Lill Packaging). These LP mailers are the best and most rigid LP mailers today featuring impact-buffer-edges and reinforced corners. These LP mailers can ship multiple records safely to your door.

If that is not enough, I add an extra protection step and ship the LP mailer box in a larger box.

I  also offer the option to pick up your order by appointment. Recommended whenever possible.

Taking care of your records

I recommend cleaning new records before listening to them.

First step is to dry-clean them with a carbon fiber anti-static record brush (like the new Hunt EDA MK6 brush) before applying any cleaning fluid. Place the record on a turntable and and spin it around. Gently apply the brush (see instructions).

Next step is the wet-cleaning process. A good record cleaning machine can be expensive. Find a dealer with a professional cleaning machine that offers this service.

Tip: Use a good stylus cleaner (like the Onzow – ZeroDust) to keep the tip of the needle free from dust. This not only improves the sound quality but also protects the vinyl from friction and wear.

For more info: Check the YouTube channel on vinyl cleaning and taking care of your records.
