Illustrated throughout with photographic plates and text illustrations of early University of Michigan football teams in action. Fielding Yost (1871-1946) was an inaugural member of the Football Hall of Fame in 1951; he is generally acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of modern football, having invented the position of linebacker, developed the concept of coaching as a profession, and organized the first ever "bowl" game (the 1902 Rose Bowl, in which Yost's Wolverines beat the Stanford Cardinal, 49-0).
