The Civil War Minie Ball Bullet Relic Case with Authentic Bullet, Case, & COA

Glass Topped Display Case 6 x 8 x 3/4”

Case Reads:

“Captain Claude Minie’ is credited with the design of the first “ball with wedge” expanding projectile in 1849. The original bullet was a cylinder-conical with three grooves and a truncated cone cavity with an iron cup designed to be forced into the base of the bullet when fired forcing the bullet to expand into the guns rifling, increasing its range and accuracy. Experiments at the Harpers Ferry and Springfield Arsenal’s in the 1850’s revealed the cup was unnecessary, the combustion gasses forced into the cavity of the bullet were sufficient to expand it into the rifling of the barrel. The bullet was rolled into a paper cylinder with powder and tied with string, forming a “cartridge”. A soldier could load twice in one minute, with an effective range of 880 yards. The North produced 2 billion bullets during the Civil War, the numbers for the Confederate States while not known, it has been estimated 2 1/2 million small arms ammunition were expanded at the Battle of Gettysburg. Changing war forever, the Mini Ball resulted in 90% of the 200,000 killed and 400,000 wounded in the Civil War. The bullet in this case is an authentic Civil War Bullet”
