This is the very latest version of this adapter and is protected by a fuse in the plug. 

Please note the actual item supplied may differ slightly from the picture.

It also has reverse polarity protection, so if you connect the DC around the wrong way you will not damage it, or your TV set.

Finally it has the latest style of DC plug that fits not only the standard "cigar" socket but the newer style of DC sockets being seen.

The bottom line is if you don't have one of these, or something like it, between your 12 volt supply and your supposedly 12 volt TV set sooner or later your TV set will probably have power supply issues and fail; unless your set has a stabiliser built in (see below).

If your battery is going flat, to compensate your TV draws more current, if you are charging the battery while watching then you are almost certainly introducing too much voltage in to the set.

This black box sits between the 12 volt plug and the TV set and regulates the voltage, so when the batteries are being charged your set gets 12 volts (+/- a fraction). If you batteries are going flat it will monitor the set down to about 10 volts (which is still safe) and then turn your TV off to prevent damage.

Very few sets have voltage regulators built in. 

Input via cigar type plug 12 volts or 24 volts (Actually up to 30 volts), output via standard 4 pin TV type plug (pictured) 12 volts ONLY.
