* CELEBRITY INFORMATION: BETTY GRABLE - December 18, 1916 - July 2, 1973 was an American actress, pin-up girl, dancer, and singer. Her 42 movies during the 1930s and 1940s grossed more than $100 million and she set a record of 12 consecutive years in the top 10 of box office stars. The U.S. Treasury Department in 1946 and 1947 listed her as the highest-salaried American woman; she earned more than $3 million during her career.
* PHOTOGRAPHER INFORMATION: JOHN ENGSTEAD - September 22, 1909 - April 15, 1983 was an American photographer born in California. Engstead began his career in 1926 as an office boy for Paramount Pictures. In 1927 he oversaw the production of Paramount’s publicity stills. In 1932, he assumed the position of studio portrait photographer. By 1941, Engstead was working for various magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar, Collier's, Esquire, House Beautiful, Ladies Home Journal, Life, Look, Mademoiselle, McCall's, Vogue, and Women's Home Companion. He photographed movie star icons like Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Maureen O'Hara, Shirley Temple Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich. Engstead built a studio in Los Angeles that became a gathering place for celebrities. He produced promotional material for many television personalities, including Pat Boone, Donna Reed, Ozzie and Harriet, Eve Arden, and Lucille Ball. He also shot cover photos for albums recorded by singers such as Peggy Lee and Connie Francis, as well as society portraits. Engstead closed his studio in 1970 but continued to accept special portrait and television assignments until his death.
