Outstanding circa 1970 Franz Kriwnek (1920-1994) art pottery near life-size Three Birds & Vines wall plaque == From Hemmle/Diehl estate in Lubbock, this beautiful work was obtained when Professor Kriwanek was teaching at Texas Tech -- Dr. Gene Hemmle was chairman of Tech's music department from 1949 to 1973 and collected many art works from his friends and associates such as Franz and Paul Milosevich (who lived across the street!) == Plaque approximately 9 1/2" x 10 1/2" and is mounted on barnwood == Near life-size birds, flowers, and foliage wonderfully detailed with a Southwestern palette of colored glazes == Signed and imprinted lower left == Franz Kriwanek was born in Austria, drafted into Hitler's army, and subsequently spent several years as a POW in England before emigrating to the US. He worked and taught at several universities before moving to Silverton, Colorado, where he established a studio producing  mostly more utilitarian pieces (wonderful in their own right) -- he is renowned for his glazes and use of local materials before his tragic death in 1994 (see last picture of his 1968 Ceramics in Texas  booklet about uses of Texas clays and local materials -- booklet not included, for illustration) == We will pack VERY carefully!! ==
