Baader 2" Fringe-Killer Filter # FFK-2 2458375

1. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Important Note About Torn Baader Filter Seals:

Recently, Baader started applying a new filter label on many filters that goes over the edge of the case and also acts as a seal. Unfortunately, these labels rip far too easily during transport, giving the false appearance that the filter case has been previously opened. Many filter labels we now get from Baader arrive partially or fully torn, and many others will rip en route from us to you. Rest assured that ALL filters we ship to you are brand new and unopened as received from Baader, whether the seal is intact or partially/completely ripped.

Baader has agreed to revert to their old design of 2-piece labels, but until they use up their current labels, we will continue to have this problem for a while and you might also get a mix of different filter label types. Thank you for your understanding.

Baader Fringe-Killer Filter for Achromatic Refractors

Achromat owners rejoice! Baader Planetarium’s Fringe Killer filter brings a better type of violet-fringe filtration to the amateur. Rather than simply blocking the shorter wavelengths like all other minus violet filters, the Fringe Killer carefully attenuates this specific region of the spectrum. This allows the filter to reduce the most damaging defocused blue wavelengths- with only a faint yellow color shift - without dimming and lowering image contrast by reducing the important green-yellow wavelengths, the range of spectrum where the eye is most sensitive and where refractors are their sharpest. The result is a filter that removes the majority of color fringes without affecting image brightness, imparting strong coloration, or reducing contrast. As any telescope owner knows, light is a valuable commodity for both planetary and deep sky viewing, and the fringe killer preserves every bit of light possible. Terrestrial observers will also find the qualities of this filter to be ideal for reducing chromatic aberration.

For a view with an even better color balance with noticeably boosted color contrasts, we highly recommend stacking a Baader Moon & Skyglow filter with the Fringe Killer. Stacking these filters results in an almost totally color balanced view. Image brightness is also very minimally affected due to the optimized formula of the Moon & Skyglow, along with the superb anti reflection coatings and optical quality of Baader filters.

The Fringe Killer is also a perfect compliment to the Baader Contrast Booster filter. The Contrast Booster is an aggressive filter, designed to deliver the maximum sharpness and contrast possible from an achromat. The result is complete removal of the violet haze, with a somewhat dimmer and yellowier image. The Contrast Booster also incorporates additional RGB filtration for further enhancing color contrasts. The Fringe Killer provides a milder more natural filtration that leaves fast achromats performing much like a classical f/15 achromat. The Fringe Killer delivers what we feel is an ideal combination of improved resolution, contrast and unaltered image brightness, along with a very aesthetically pleasing view.

The coatings required to accomplish this innovative filtration are exceedingly complex, requiring almost 50 layers per side, using the latest DWDM Plasma assisted coating process. The Fringe Killer has perhaps the most complex coating ever achieved on an amateur astronomical filter.

The Ideal Filter for Imaging with Achromatic Refractors

Digital Imagers with CCD, CMOS, DigiCam, and Webcam cameras will find the Fringe Killer to be the ultimate match for their achromatic refractor. The high transmission and fringe reduction work great for both planetary and deep sky imaging. Baader has also chosen to include their renowned UV/IR Cut coatings as part of the Fringe Killer formula. These coatings maintain very high transmission, with well placed sharp cutoffs in the IR and UV.

Just like all the other Baader Planetarium filters, the Fringe Killer offers their trademark high quality and features. The result is industry leading performance and value.

Superior Optical Quality, Even at High Magnification

At the heart of the Baader filters are their special fine optical substrate polishing process and advanced hard coating design. The result is a filter that imparts virtually no image degradation. Manufacturers of lesser filters, to prevent deterioration from cleaning or exposure to moisture, sometimes resort to sandwiching their delicate coatings between two layers of filter glass, resulting in potential blurred or double images. Unlike these lesser filters, the superior optical quality of Baader filters allows for use at higher magnifications which are particularly useful for studying fine detail, particularly in brighter diffuse and planetary nebulae. Baader filters can take high magnifications, and stars retain their pinpoint sharpness, even if the filter is used far ahead of the image plane when used for astrophotography or when used ahead of a star diagonal or binoviewer.  Baader filters fulfill the requirements of an ideal optical filter - to perform at highest efficiency without any other detectable effect on the image.

Advanced Optical Manufacturing for Long Life and Superior Performance

Unlike many budget filters, Baader Planetarium filters are not “biscuit cut” out of larger plates of glass, a process that causes micro-cracks around the filter edges. These cracks can attract moisture between the glass substrate and coating layers via capillary action which causes premature aging and degradation.

By contrast, each Baader filter is individually cut to size (either 1¼", 31mm, 36mm, 2", 50,4mm, 50x50mm, 65x65mm), then polished flat on both sides to a quarter wavelength to ensure maximum image sharpness and distortion over the entire filter, even when the filter is not close to the focal plane. Then each blank is then individually coated with a hard, ion-beam-deposited scratch-resistant coating. However, the coating is not applied all the way to the edge of the substrate to ensure the filter is sealed against the penetration of moisture, even in very humid conditions. This is especially important in multilayer, narrowband filters where moisture can seep in if the coating is not properly deposited. The hard coatings also mean Baader filters are easier and safer to clean without damage.

Baader filters are also tested repeatedly to comply with MIL-specifications. One common process is to boil the test specimen for one hour in salt water to induced damage. Unlike budget filters cut from larger plates, Baader filters remained completely intact without changes in their transmission characteristics after this rigorous environmental testing.

Baader’s careful engineering and manufacturing mean you need to buy a Baader filter just once and it will last you for a lifetime of astronomical observations.

About Baader Filter Cells

Many filter vendors insert their filter blanks into standard tightly-screwed filter cells. Unfortunately, the stress on the filter can result in drastic deformations of the substrate and degradation in optical performance.

That’s why all Baader filters are no longer tightly fixed but are held spring-loaded in the filter cell. The filter glass may ever so slightly “clatter” in the cell when shaken, but that neither affects the image quality nor results in a displacement in the final image. This “clatter” is not a flaw in the filter cell. It is entirely intentional.

3. US SHIPPING

A. Delivery Time:

  • USPS First Class shipments will generally take 3-5 business days to arrive after we ship it. Priority Mail shipments will generally take 2-3 business days. However, these delivery times are NOT guaranteed by the USPS. Delays of up to 2 (or sometimes even 3) weeks can occur in about 5% of the shipments due to Covid, operational, or other issues.
  • UPS shipments will generally take between 1 and 6 business days to be delivered depending on the method you select.

USPS and UPS do NOT offer any refunds for shipping/delivery delays for ANY reason (except for UPS Next Day Air service). Delays are out of our control once your order ships.

B. Tracking/Delivery Confirmation:eBay will update you once your order ships. You can see the order status or tracking information/link from your eBay account at any time.

C. USPS Tracking Limitations: Please note that is common for USPS tracking to show “Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item” or “Shipment Received, Package Acceptance Pending” even several days after your order ships. This does not mean that there is a problem with your order or that we have not handed over your package to USPS yet. This simply means that your package is en route without an outbound scan and tracking will not be updated until the package reaches a distribution center at your end several days later.

4. INTERNATIONAL ORDERING / SHIPPING

A. Shipping Cost: Click on the "Shipping and Payments" tab above and select your country to see your shipping choices and cost. If you need a shipping cost estimate for multiple items, please contact us.

B. Delivery Time:

Please note that eBay’s delivery estimates shown are generally too optimistic!

1. UPS (All Shipping Methods):

    • We strongly recommend the use of UPS for international orders due to issues related to the ongoing Covid situation. Delivery time usually varies between 3-7 business days depending on your country and the exact shipping method you select.

2. USPS First Class International:

    • First class packages will usually be carried by GlobalPost (a USPS international delivery partner) for most of the way. Delivery at your end will be handled by your local postal service.
    • Delivery generally takes about 3-4 weeks after we ship your package. This can frequently take 4-6 weeks or more for several countries (8 weeks for Italy, Argentina, and South Africa; 8-12 weeks for Brazil).
    • There is very limited tracking available for 1st class shipments and there is no inquiry/tracing service. Once your package ships, we can do nothing but wait until your package arrives. Please do not become impatient and contact us in 2-3 weeks if your package has not arrived. If you don't receive the package in 6-8 weeks, contact us and we will work with you to resolve the issue.
    • If you don't want to take the risk of this delay or lack of tracking, DO NOT USE First Class mail - use Priority or Express shipping, or better still, UPS instead.
    • Packages are not considered lost unless 60 days have elapsed from the date of shipment.

3. USPS Priority Mail International: Delivery takes about 2 weeks to most countries after we ship your package. This can sometimes take 3-4 weeks to several countries. The USPS provides some basic tracking information for Priority shipping. Packages are not considered lost unless 60 days have elapsed from the date of shipment.

4. USPS Express Mail International: Delivery usually takes 5-10 business days after we ship your package. Packages are not considered lost unless 30 days have elapsed from the date of shipment.

Again, these delivery times are NOT guaranteed by the US Postal Service. The most common reason for delays is slow customs inspection and clearance in your country, and can be very long, even for Express mail packages. Upon shipping your order, delivery delays are beyond our control, so do not leave us negative feedback or file a claim if your package is delayed. Delays are quite common but losses are very rare, so your patience and understanding will be greatly appreciated.

C. Brokerage Fees, Customs and Duties:

  • You are responsible for any carrier brokerage fees and duties/taxes that may be levied in your country. These are not included in our item price or shipping cost. UPS brokerage fees can be quite hefty.
  • We have no control over these charges and cannot predict what they may be or if they will be levied upon delivery.
  • Customs policies vary widely from country to country (Some countries such as UK are strict about imposing hefty customs duties). It is your responsibility to check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.
  • Customs fees are normally charged by the delivery company or your country's postal service or collected when you pick the item up. These fees are NOT additional shipping charges.
