(About Capiz shells: Capiz shells are actually the outer shells of a marine
mollusc; its scientific name is placuna placenta, more commonly known as
"windowpane oyster". Philippine Capiz shells are so named because they
were originally harvested from the shallow coastal waters near the town
of Capiz, on the island of Panay. Once cleaned, the shells are naturally
translucent and, when painted, allow for a glorious interplay between
light and colour.)
(About Metal Lotus: This metallic tea light holder is crafted with the ancient craft
of metal and glass casting. Metal casting is a modern process with
ancient roots. It involves metal shapes being formed by pouring molten
metal into a mold cavity, where it is cooled and later extracted from
the mold. It is arguably the earliest and most influential industrial
process in history. Similarly, glass casting involves preparing a mold
which is often made of a mixture of plaster and refractory materials
such as silica. A model is then made from any solid materials, like wax,
wood or metal, and after taking a cast of the model (a process called
investment) the model is removed from the mold. One method of forming a
mold is by the Cire Perdue or "lost wax" method. Using this method, a
model is made from wax and after investment the wax is steamed or burned
away in a kiln, forming a cavity. The heat resistant mold is then
placed in a kiln equipped with a funnel-like opening filled with solid
glass granules. The kiln is heated to temperatures between 800 °C (1470
°F) and 1,000 °C (1830 °F), and as the glass melts it runs into and
fills the mold, revealing an exquisite object of art on solidification.)
