This book was first published in 1999 and it describes in great detail the 1958 1959 and 1960 Les Paul Standard guitars. In the book, there are several great pictures of these legendary guitars. Each of the 40th Anniversary Model 1959 ReIssue R9 Les Paul Standards were shipped with a copy of this book.
Gibson only made these guitars for one year, in 1999, and like this one, most of them are still in private collections. The guitar weighs in at just 8.6 pounds which is a full two to three pounds less, than a lot of the AAAAA Killer K flametops or even the hand picked custom ordered Yamano R9 Monster Top Brazilian Rosewood models or Tom Murphy Aged Custom Shop R9 Les Pauls.
We absolutely love the work that Tom Murphy does and he's one of the most respected luthiers on the planet, but why spend $20,000 on an Aged Model that's been scratched and beat up, when you can have a near mint and highly collectable 40th Anniversary 1959 ReIssue Les Paul like this, for the same price ? Collectible Guitars are like Collectible Classic Cars and the cleaner they are, the more they're worth. I'd certainly rather have a nice clean 1957 Chevy Bel Air ( or a near mint R4 R5 R6 R7 R8 R9 R0 54 55 56 57 58 59 60 1954 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960 Les Paul Standard or Custom ) than an "aged one" any day.
Once again, this guitar was made in 1999 and like any 18 to 20 year old used vintage instrument, it's not perfect, but it's very close. The frets are all original and reflect very little use, so it hasn't been played much at all. The guitar is extremely clean and in near mint to mint condition. The case reflects some normal use but it's also in great shape and everything on it works properly.
These 40th Anniversary Model 1959 Les Pauls are extremely rare, especially with a flame top like this one and one that's in near mint condition. And that's not to mention all of the factory original extras, like this guitar has.
