Hold the world in your hand with this lovely art glass Earth marble with NASA "Meatball" Logo!!

The full-color Natural Earth continents on this GORGEOUS marble are glass glazes, hand-fired in the USA in a kiln at over 1000 degrees, so they will never wear off!  The globe features more than 50 rivers and beautiful forests, icecaps, deserts and shadow relief mountain ranges in amazing detail.  The "NASA" logo text is printed in the Pacific Ocean.  Measures 22mm (.9 inch).

NASA’s original logo dates back to 1959 and was a bit more complex in design that the logo you see on this marble.  It was amended when the decision was made to design a logo that could be used for less formal purposes.  The seal was simplified, leaving only the white stars and orbital path on a round field of blue with a red airfoil.  Then white N-A-S-A lettering was added.  In the “Meatball” design, the sphere represents a planet, the stars represent space, the red chevron is a wing representing aeronautics (the latest design in hypersonic wings at the time the logo was developed), and then there is an orbiting spacecraft going around the wing.  Known officially as the insignia, NASA’s round logo was not called the “Meatball” until 1975.  That’s when NASA decided a more modern logo was in order.  Designers  were hired to replace the complex meatball with a stripped-down, modernist interpretation where even the cross stroke of the A’s were removed.  It was given the name of the "Worm" logo.  17 years later, despite its winning the prestigious “Award of Design Excellence” by The Presidential Design Awards, NASA scrapped the stripped down design and re-instated the “meatball” which has remained the logo until present day.

As of May 2020, NASA is bringing back its "Worm" logo, marking the achievement of returning human spaceflight to American soil.  The space agency said the retro-looking logo will be stamped on the side of the Falcon 9 rocket that will carry astronauts to the International Space Station as part of SpaceX's Demo-2 flight.  NASA says there’s a good chance you’ll see the logo featured in other missions, too.  We are also selling this marble in a set with the "Worm" logo in our Etsy Store.
