My War in Bougainville A Soldier with the 9th Battalion AMF Milne Bay by Tod Schacht
Tod Schacht, the author, was a mortar man with the 9th Battalion and gives very vivid descriptions / account of what it was like to be part of the jungle warfare. He had to endure the hardships of living in the war environment of those islands for an extended period in World War II. Within the book he also describes wartime Brisbane and other locale in Queensland.
Much of the fighting in Papua New Guinea was carried out by militia units. One such unit was the Queensland 9th AMF Battalion. When the Japanese attempted to defeat the Australian Garrison at Milne Bay in 1942, they were thrown back into the sea after just 10 days fighting. The 9th was part of the defence and experienced the hard times of those days of savage encounter.
The Battalion ended the war in Bougainville, where the troops were involved in a grinding and wasteful battle to push the Japanese out of their positions and off the island.
This book would be of high interest to anyone researching the day-to-day life of the 9th Battalion AMF militia during World War II.
