Camera background:

The Nikkormat (Labeled Nikomat for the Japanese market) FT-N was manufactured from 1967 to 1975 in Japan.  It replaced the Nikkormat FT and FS with a few improvements:
  • It simplified the mounting procedure of the rabbit ear Nikkor lenses.  The meter coupling pin on the camera still had to be aligned with the meter coupling shoe on the lens, but the lens maximum aperture no longer had to be manually preset on the FTN (like it had to be on the FT and FS). (See below for mounting instructions)
  • New metering system;  the Nikon 60/40 percent center weighted style was introduced.
  • +/-  over/underexposure - and set shutter speed were added to the viewfinder.
  • Offered a choice between a Type J or Type A focusing screens when the camera was ordered.
The Nikkormat was introduced as a Mid-Range camera (Between Amateur and Professional).  It is fully mechanical operation - battery only required for the light meter - so it is possible to shoot pics with a dead battery.

The FT-N was the best seller in the Nikkormat line during it's 8 year production life.  It was often referred to as the poor mans Nikon "F".

Due to it's sturdy metal construction, ease of use in manual operation, and excellent picture quality, the Nikkormat FT-N is an excellent everyday shooter and/or student camera.

NOTE: How to mount a Nikon "Rabbit Eared" lens.

  • Set lens aperture to 5.6

  • Insert rabbit ear onto indexing post on camera and seat the lens onto the camera body

  • Turn counter clockwise to mount the lens

  • Turn the aperture ring back and forth to the smallest aperture (largest F stop number) and then to the largest aperture (smallest F stop number)

  • The lens and the FT-N are now coupled properly.  Nippon Kogaku called this "indexing the maximum aperture of the lens and meter correctly".  Most Photographers refer to this as the "Nikon Shuffle".
