Description: Hard to believe -- nearly two decades later -- that many thought all computers would stop Jan. 1, 2000. This vintage newsprint publication, published by the State of Wisconsin Department of Administration (Y2K Project), was created to, "featuring information about the year 2000 readiness of all sectors of the Wisconsin economy, practical advice for families and miscellaneous information. It was distributed free and was required to be stocked by all Wisconsin public libraries. There was even a hotline set up!
The guide contains pragmatic preparatory advice about handling your money, stocking your pantry and answers to common Y2K questions (Will my computer still compute?, Will My
Toaster Still Toast? and The power is off: is my food still safe to eat?). There's also a Household Preparedness Checklist. The state's
overall recommendation, one that might not make as much sense in some states,
was for those in the Upper Midwest region of the United States to
"Prepare for Y2K Like a Winter Storm" (meaning more than simply stocking up on beer and bratwurst!).
Fascinating historical reading at this point and a scarce collectible of an emergency that didn't happen!
