Francisco Rebajes (1905-1990) signed copper plaque with stylized image of an African Ubangi woman with long, ringed neck and huge hoop earring. Rebajes was born in the Dominican Republic and came to New York at eighteen. As a young man, the self-taught artist made sculptures out of scrap metal. When he offered his work at an outdoor show in Washington Square, the Whitney Museum bought them all, enabling him to set up shop in Greenwich Village.

By the late 1930s, Rebajes creations were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the 1939 New York World's Fair.
