The searing classic of a paradise lost.
James Dean. Actor. Rebel. Giat. Perhaps no other star had such a sudden and lasting impact on Hollywood - and the world.
East of Eden, based on John Steinbeck's epic novel, is the first of three major films that make up the Dean legacy. Dean stars as Cal Trask, a youth who vies for his father's affection with Aron (Richard Davalos), the favored son. Cal's desperate need for love is exceeded by his even more desperate attempts to obtain it. And in Cal's frantic efforts, the youth of the postwar "generation gap" era saw a quest that mirrored their own.
Even before the film's release, Dean - hailed by the press as the new Brando - emerged as a talent to be reckoned with. Said Eden's director Elia Kazan, "At the very end of shooting, the last few days, you felt a star was going to be born. Everybody smelled it; all the publicity people began to hand around him."
Dean's impact exceeded the buildup. He was not the new Brando. He was the first - and only - James Dean. His memorable, on-edge performance brought him one of the film's four Academy Award nominations. Additionally, the foreign press honored the picture with the Golden Globe as Best Motion Picture/Drama and, among the stellar performances surrounding Dean, Jo Van Fleet won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress.
But East of Eden is, from beginning to end, James Dean's film. See it and discover why a man 30 years dead remains every generations icon of troubled youth.
