For sale is an exceptional painting by the well regarded English artist Joseph Wrightson McIntyre (1841 - 1894)

McIntyre was a northeast England marine painter of local landscapes and coastal views.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution.

Although this is a small and intimate painting it must be considered among his best works.

It features a sweeping view of Scarborough Bay in North Yorkshire on Englands North Sea coastline. A view of the 12th century Scarborough Castle is seen high on the headland in the distant.

A couple, dressed in their Sunday best, take in the view of sailboats coasting along the shore as beach goers stroll along the coast.

We purchased this painting as an unsigned painting but upon closer inspection we can clearly see the signature of Joseph Wrightson McIntyre and the date of 1874 in the rocky outcropping lower right.

The medium appears to be light wispy strokes of oil paint on paper. With perhaps some gouache highlights.

The framer retained the original backer board with label from the highly regarded artist supply dealers Hibbert Brothers of Sheffield (see pic).

This painting deserves to be in a museum back in the United Kingdom. It is that spectacular. Please see our close-up detail pictures for consideration.

The painting looks to be on paper and laid on a paper backing (see pic detail).

Framed in contemporary framing. But some original materials still present. The gold painted matting is later than the frame.

Condition: The painting being excellent. The gold matte board with some losses. Otherwise fine

IF PURCHASED INTERNATIONAL,, THE FRAME WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE SALE. ARTWORK WILL SHIP WITHOUT THE FRAME.
