"Land of the free ... because of the brave!"

New York Spectator. August 23, 1831
“ The court of common pleas of Chester county, [New York] rejected a witness who declared his disbelief in the existence of God. The presiding judge remarked that he had not before been aware that there was a man living who did not believe in the existence of God; that this belief constituted the sanction of all testimony in a court of justice: and that he knew of no cause in a Christian country where a witness had been permitted to testify without such belief.

The "Red Baron" was the allied nickname for German air ace Manfred von Richthofen, the leading ace of the war with 80 kills.

"The Blue Max" officially the Order of Merit. From Prussia. Established in 1667 by Margrave Frederick (later to become King Frederick I), the Orden Pour le Mérite was originally known as the Brandenburg Ordre de la Génerosité (Order of Generosity).

Reorganized by Frederick II in 1740, it became the Orden Pour le Mérite (Order of Merit) and was awarded to military personnel and civilians. The Order was again reorganized in 1810 by Frederick William III who reserved it solely for individual military achievement on the battlefield against the enemy.

After the Prussian army occupied Paris in 1814, a total of 1,662 Pour le Mérites were awarded. Of those, 1,470 Pour le Mérites were awarded to Russians. In 1842, Frederick William IV added a civil class for scholars, painters, sculptors, and musicians.

Following the armistice of 1918, the Orden Pour le Mérite was never again awarded for military service.  During World War I, Prussia's highest military award, the Orden Pour le Mérite, was awarded to military personnel for repeated and continual gallantry in action.

Of all officers in the German army and navy, the most frequent recipients of the Orden Pour le Mérite were junior officers in the German Air Force. During World War I, it was awarded to 81 German military aviators: 76 army aviators and  5 naval aviators. Of that total, 78 of the recipients were officers who held the rank of Captain or below.

Recipients were required to wear the medal whenever they were in uniform.

The Blue Max was the center of the World War I film "The Blue Max" in 1966,  starring George Peppard, James Mason and Ursula Andress, tells the story of a German pilot trying to earn the coveted Blue Max medal for reaching twenty enemy kills.  The "Blue Max", a coveted medal for achievement in flying, is ruthlessly sought by a German pilot who climbs out of the trenches and into the air force. He is met with prejudice by the other contestants, wealthy snobs who look down on his low economic stature. When he claims the titles, he earns the respect of the General and the General's wife, who wants to repay him in ways that the General might not appreciate.

The "Red Baron" was the allied nickname for German air ace Manfred von Richthofen, the leading ace of the war with 80 kills.

The most famous ace of the war, Manfred von Richthofen briefly served in the trenches before transferring to the German Air Force in 1916. Oswald Boelcke's star pupil was a fast learner and achieved immediate success. A month after receiving his first Albatros, Richthofen had six victories against Allied aircraft. As his reputation grew, the "Red Knight of Germany" painted the fuselage of his Albatros D.III bright red to flaunt his prowess in the air. The British called him the jolly "Red Baron," to the French he was the "Red Devil." He was shot down as he flew over the trenches in pursuit of Wilfrid May on 21 April 1918. Although Arthur Brown was officially credited with the victory, evidence suggests Richthofen was hit by a single bullet fired from a machine gun in the trenches. A British pilot flew over the German aerodrome at Cappy and dropped a note informing the Germans of the Baron's death. Buried in France with full military honors, Richthofen's body was later exhumed and reburied in the family cemetery at Wiesbaden.

The First World War introduced a new form of battleground: to ground and sea warfare could now be added aerial conflict.  Nascent aircraft technology was quickly and relentlessly developed to produce machines capable of serving each country initially in reconnaissance missions (ideal in conditions of trench warfare) and later in fighter and bombing raids.

The air war threw up a new breed of fighter, and in general the Allied and Central Powers' governments proved quick in exploiting the successes of their airmen for propaganda purposes (although the British were less inclined to trumpet the Royal Flying Corps' achievements, with one or two notable exceptions).

The French government was the first to award the distinction of 'ace' to those of their fighters who had demonstrably downed five enemy aircraft.  Independent confirmation was a strict requirement however, which often posed a practical difficulty in crowded dogfight circumstances.

The German government quickly followed, later specifying however that eight sixteen 'kills' were required for a pilot to be considered an ace and eligible for the prestigious Pour le Merite award.

Britain - and later the U.S. - followed the French example, although both were more lenient in allowing 'probable' victories to count.  The British Distinguished Flying Cross was available to those pilots who had scored at least eight victories.

Most victories were scored in the crowded skies above the Western Front.  Even then reliable statistics are not easy to come by: figures for the other fronts (e.g. the war in the East) are even more unreliable.

It was routine for pilots to claim 'kill' figures notably higher than their official figures.  Some units also instated regimes whereby 'easy' targets were to be left to the leading aces, thus further boosting their totals (much to the resentment of junior pilots).

Recipients of this medal were Baron Von Richthoffen (The Red Baron) Generalfeldmarschal Otto Von Hindenburg, Generalfeldmarschal Mackensen, Herman Goering.

Fokker E.III, built 1915, powered by Oberursel UI 9-cylinder air-cooled rotary 100 HP engine, weighed 1,342 lbs., max. speed of 88 MPH, max. ceiling of 11,500 feet,
1 synchronized Spandau machine gun
