Irish Free State (1922–1937) became an independent state (from the British Empire) and was established in 1922, and was renamed Éire in 1937. Article 4 of the Irish constitution adopted in 1937 by the government under Éamon de Valera states that Éire is the name of the state, or in the English language, Ireland.
