Because the yerba mate gourd is a dried out fruit, please be aware that the product might have the debris from the hollowing out process inside (like pith, seeds etc), and they need to be special cured before they are used for the first time. That helps to prevent cracking and mold growth.

These mate gourds, are handmade by uruguayan artisans, each gourd will have its own unique characteristics. In general gourds are approximately the size of an average fruit (apple, pear or peach), some are a little bigger, some are a little smaller. It varies because they are natural. They are very comfortable to hold in your hand. 

You will need to "cure" the Mate cup before using it for the first time.
This process must be made only once. To cure the Mate cup, please follow these instructions:

1) PLACE YERBA MATE TEA IN THE MATE GOURD "CUP".
2) ADD WARM WATER TO IT.
3) LET REST FOR 24 to 48 HOURS.
4) REMOVE THE YERBA, RINSE THE GOURD AND GENTLY SCRAP THE SOFT TISSUES WITH A SPOON.
5) THE MATE GOURD CUP IT'S NOW READY TO BE USED.
