A superb example of a

World War Two

Air Raid Precautions

hallmarked & 1938 dated label badge.

Ordered and designed by

The Home Office

in 1936 with the start of issue in 1937,

the distinctive silver badge

was to be issued to

"persons who volunteer for ARP services and who undergo the necessary training".

which included  first aid & medical services; rescue or demolition services,

decontamination of material, air raid wardens & gas detection officers.

Within the hallmarks were 4 capital letters A (1936) B (1937) C (1938) D (1939)

and this lovely badge carries the 'D' for the year war was declared.

Issued up until March 1943,

(until the metal ARP badges were replaced by cloth Civil Defence insignia),

the ARP badge was distributed to qualified recipients by

all Local Authorities and the wearing of one if not entitled to so do

resulted in a £20 civil fine.

There were two silversmith's initials to the rear of these silver badges:

(both Deputy Masters of The Royal Mint)

RJ (Sir Robert Arthur Johnson) on 1936 & 37 badges

and

JC (Sir John Herbert McCutcheon Craig) on 1938 & 39 badges.

This example is the JC  (C 1938) marked model.

A very attractive silver lapel badge

and a lovely souvenir of the

British World War Two Home Front

Thanks for looking..!
