MARVIN HOLMES is best known as the front man with his groups The Uptights, Justice and The Funk Company

Holmes hailed from Oakland, California and began his career in the early 60s. The Uptights peddled a tough, typically “Oakland” funk sound.

In the 70s Holmes founded his own Brown Door Records and with the group Justice. His ‘You Better Keep Her’ won some plays on the UK Northern soul scene.

Holmes is considered to be one of the founding fathers of Oakland funk. Marvin Holmes & The Uptights emerged as the Oakland Bay Area’s hottest soul band in the early 60’s and 70’s. “The Funky Mule, Part 1 & 2” became a national hit. Marvin wrote songs that were recorded by the The Natural Four, Buddy Miles Express and Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm.
