Combustion Leak Detector Kit

Combustion leakage into the cooling system is very damaging. Exhaust gases mix with the coolant and form corrosive acids. The acids can cause holes in the radiator and corrode other components.

The CO leak tester kit is designed to check for the presence of combustion gases in the engine coolant. It should be performed when signs (overheating, bubbles in the coolant, rise in coolant level upon starting) point to a blown head gasket, cracked block, or cracked cylinder head.

How does the test work?

In the case of a damaged gasket under the head or the head itself, part of the combustion gases containing CO goes to the cooling system, at this point they react with the liquid and change its colour.

The combustion leak tester may be used effectively on any type of internal combustion engine having a radiator, whether petrol, diesel or LPG powered.

Advantages:
  •  Fast, economical and accurate method to test for combustion gas leaks
  • Sure diagnosis within a few minutes
  • Positive proof that a leak is present when the tester fluid changes colour on detection of CO gas - if there is a hairline crack in the cylinder head, engine block or damage to the cylinder head gasket, the test fluid turns yellow or green
  • Ideal for routine checks and scheduled maintenance work
  • Ideal for engine checks on used cars
  • 30ml test fluid, enough for 15 applications (2ml per test)
  • The fluid used in the tester is harm-less, acid-free and non-combustible (environment-friendly; problem-free disposal)

Instructions for use:

1.    Fill the device with reaction fluid to the level just below the chambers (approx. 2ml), as shown in the picture below.

2.    Connect the tester to the opening of the expansion tank or radiator.

3.  Start the engine (preferably already warm), bring it to a higher speed to obtain a higher combustion pressure.

4.  Let the engine run at a slightly increased speed and observe the behaviour of the reaction fluid (it should be moving and allowing bubbles of air through).

5.   Changing the colour of the reaction fluid to yellow or green within a few minutes indicates a damaged gasket under the head or damage to the head itself. Do not perform the test for longer than 5 minutes, as heat is harmful to the reaction fluid.

6.    After the test has been completed, carefully remove the device. The used test fluid should be disposed of. Do not attempt to return it to the bottle, even if the test result was negative (fluid stayed blue) - it may carry contamination, which could ruin the entire bottle of fluid.

  The set includes:

  • CO reaction fluid - 30ml
  • Test tube
  • Sealing adapter - rubber bung with diameter of approx. 37mm (narrow end) and 41mm (wide end). ***Please note that although it fits most cars, we recommend checking the size of the inlet in your car before placing an order.***
