This is a high quality model airplane covering film produced by famous German firm Graupner…  but before I start to present its features please let me share some personal history:

I have been covering model airplane structures for about 40+ years using a variety of heat shrink covering films, some of them were just fair, some gave average results and a few had features that gave the opportunity to produce the high class/show type finish I require… have to confess that almost all films tried where creditable/good products as they provided the builder with a good basic covering film to finish their models.

Have always had a great respect for Graupner products so when the opportunity came to buy a complete new bulk roll of Superfilm from a friendly local hobby shop owner that was just clearing his stock I took the chance for several good reasons:

- Liked the color… a unique light blue that combines color vividness without being overly bright… very pleasing to the eye.

- Product label described some novel features that looked quite promising.

- Material used is thermo plastic which based on my experience is the best choice to conform around compound three dimensional curves.

After actual use on balsa sheet or open structures as well as direct foam application I was pleased with results:

-Found to be one of the easiest coverings to apply… good beginner covering film.

- Foam covering either XPS or EPS is almost as easy as balsa… a base primer/layer of heat activated adhesive will definitely help adhesion but this applies to all film coverings used on bare foam.

- Despite being plastic based it has very good puncture resistance and able to stiffen an open frame/built up wing… but not as much as a polyester base covering.

- Compound curves such as wing tips are easy to cover as it has good strechability when locally heated, a few micro wrinkles produced by mistakes are almost diminished by further heat application… but only up to a critical high temperature threshold point…this critical temperature point applies to all film coverings… with Superfilm this point is quite wide and a progressively darkening color change gives early warning to stop pushing the material.

- Wide temperature range is most welcome especially when combined with an additional base adhesive layer…this wide range is an important factor and Supercote adhesive layer is extremely heat sensitive so able to stick from quite low heat to almost top limit… at this top temp limit some coverings just highly melt their adhesive layer but without being able to sufficiently stick.

- Ability to stick at how heat renders it as  an excellent foam covering  film as well as eliminating future bubble formation… apart from the underlying structure or actual film moisture content  high heat  initial application is the major factor to induce future surface bubble/wrinkles.

- Color layer is reported to be enclosed/protected between the outer plastic film and bottom adhesive layer… in actual practice I have found that indeed it is not easy to melt away the color layer and this prevents to produce local smudges etc.

- Totally moisture proof…  a rare quality and very important for longevity of finish.

Some other factors also looked promising such as UV protection (I have 20+ year old models where the original color pigment has almost faded away!) and no odor/ health hazard protection which are very welcomed… despite the Graupner product label description stating this is light blue Matt the film is high gloss as usual with plastic base coverings.

Did I liked the covering? Definitely yes and would recommend it even for beginners as it forgives initial mistakes… is it the best or ultimate covering film?

I sincerely have to say no as there is no such a thing as a PERFECT film covering… but Superfilm  combines so  many desirable features that is surely in the list of my three favorite all time coverings… and I am definitely not a model covering expert so it has to be good!

PS: Even from the early vintage/golden days model airframe film covering was considered by many to be an art and science combined… it is also plain fact that it’s quite a difficult task to produce a truly show type finish using only film… but for the first time beginner film covering in general is probably the easiest and fastest way to produce an acceptable durable and lightweight finish!
