Notes: FIRST EDITION. Circa 1787. "An Essay..." is the first significant work on anthropology published in America. Divided into two sections, this hardcover edition is in very good condition, rebound in dark tan, linen cloth. Gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Leaves are made of laid paper. Pages show yellowing with some foxing and minor creasing throughout, yet are all beautifully legible. Edges show minor chipping and wear, (particularly at the foot and at pages toward the back), but are otherwise sturdy and complete. Title page bears the name of the previous owner, inscribed in 1812. Number stamp from vintage numbering machine (circa unknown) on title page and also at the first page of the second section. Very minor marginalia on several pages. The first section, "Complexion and Figure of the Human Species" is 111 pp.; "Strictures" is 31 pp. A lovely copy. Full refund if not satisfied.
