20th Century English School, Oil on board, Lord Leycester Hospital, Warwick.
This painting features the West Gate of Warwick, with the Chapel of Saint James the Great built on top of it.
The original chapel was built by Roger de Newburgh in 1126, and when his wife died at an early age it became a Chantry Chapel where Mass was celebrated for the repose of her soul.
The Guild of Saint George was created under a licence issued by King Richard II in 1383, and in 1386 Thomas Beauchamp, the 12th Earl of Warwick granted the benefice of the Chapel to the Guild and rebuilt it. The tower was added and the gate underneath was extended, and in 1860 an extensive restoration was undertaken by Sir Gilbert Scott, after anxious townsfolk feared the chapel was about to collapse into the road beside it.
The painting  measures  16" x 12" in a frame 24" x 20".
