Ginsberg's landmark collection, including the title poem with its long cadences echoing Whitman, and the poet's address to America beginning, "America I've given you my all and now I'm nothing." The book became notorious after copies were siezed in San Francisco by U.S. Customs and Ferlinghetti was charged with publishing and selling obscene materials. Ferlinghetti was aquitted in October 1957.
