Dypro Multi-Purpose Dye 500g Tins

Dypro Multi-Purpose Dye is ideal for dyeing costumes and props for all types of theatrical and cinematic productions, in large quantities.

Dypro Multi-Purpose Dye is made for the professional dyer; it is suitable for dyeing natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, viscose, wool and silk, as well as being suitable for nylon, spandex, rayon, and Lycra. It is also suitable for dyeing buttons and feathers. 

Instructions For Stovetop Fabric Dyeing

 

Important Information Before Dyeing

 

Suitable Fabrics: cotton, linen, viscose, wool, silk, nylon and Lycra (elastane).

Not Suitable For: pure synthetics (except nylon), polyester/wool mixtures, or fabrics with special finishes.

Multi-Purpose Dye is not colourfast so garments should always be washed separately.

5g of powder is sufficient to dye up to 250g/8 oz dry weight fabric.


Colour Number / Amount of Dye Powder to Use Per 500g/1lb of Fabric:

 

02, 09, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 32, 33, 34, 39, 44, 53     /   10g

05, 07, 17    /   12g

08   /   16g


 You will need: -

- 30g / 1oz of salt

- Rubber gloves

- A saucepan


Instructions for fabric dyeing on stovetop: 

 

1. Weigh dry fabric. Wash fabric thoroughly even if new and leave damp.

2. Fill saucepan or similar heatproof container with enough hot water to cover article and allow easy movement during dyeing.

3. Wearing rubber gloves, dissolve correct amount of dye (see reference chart) in 500ml/1 pint of boiling water, stir well.

4. Add solution to vessel with 30g/1oz salt, stirring well.

5. Put in clean, damp article and raise temperature to simmer, then stir constantly for 20 minutes to ensure even dyeing.

6. Rinse article until water runs clear. Results are not colourfast, so dyed garments should be turned inside out and washed separately.

7. Dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not use tumble dryer.

Other Fabrics

 

Wool and Silk

 

Follow method above, steps 1-4, then


5.  Place damp unfolded fabric into the vessel. Bring slowly to simmer and reduce heat at once. Stir gently for 10 minutes.

6.  Remove article from dye solution, supporting the weight, and allow to cool before rinsing in lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Dry away from direct heat and sunlight.


Stockings and Tights

 

10g of dye will colour 3-5 pairs of heavy nylon stockings or tights. For 4 pairs of 15 denier use half the dye solution to 2 ¼ litres / 4 ½ pints of water.

Washing Machine Method

 

Important Information Before Dyeing

 

(For fully automatic front-loading washing machines only).

Do NOT dye wool or silk in the washing machine.

Do NOT dye less than 500g / 1lb dry fabric weight or more than half the machine maximum wash load.

Do NOT use economy or half load programmes.

Instructions for fabric dyeing in washing machine: 

 

1. Weigh and wash the fabric and leave damp.

2. Wearing rubber gloves, add requited amount of dye to drum of washing machine (not soap dispenser).

3. Add 60g/2oz of salt per 500g/I lb of fabric being dyed, covering the dye powder.

4. Place damp, unfolded fabric into the machine. Set and run the longest, hottest wash cycle, without pre-wash.

5. Remove the fabric from the machine and dry away from heat or direct sunlight.

6. Clean the machine immediately by running the longest, hottest wash with one cup of bleach. 

7. Wash articles dyed with multi-purpose dye separately.

8. Re-seal the tin immediately after use.

9. To improve the wash fastness of the fabric (i.e., to reduce colour fading), treat the fabric with Dyprofix after it has been dyed.

 

Dyprofix

Overview

Fabric dyes such as Dypro multi-purpose dye are not always colourfast. Colours can fade if the fabric is washed regularly.

If a garment such as a costume used in a play is worn and washed regularly, Dyprofix can help to keep the colours in the fabric looking vibrant.

 

Instructions for Fixing Colour Using Dyprofix

Dyprofix

Fabric dyes such as Dypro multi-purpose dye are not always colourfast. Colours can fade if the fabric is washed regularly.

If a garment such as a costume used in a play is worn and washed regularly, Dyprofix can help to keep the colours in the fabric looking vibrant.


Dyprofix is available in a 250ml bottle complete with measuring cap. The usage guide is as follows:

 

Washing Machine Method:

Make sure the fabric is rinsed thoroughly so that any loose dye is removed

Place the damp fabric in the washing machine

For each 500g of fabric, add 20ml fix (1 tablespoon) to the washing machine drum (for dark colour such as black, use twice as much fix)

Run a complete 40 degrees cotton cycle

Dry away from direct sunlight and heat

Bowl Method:

Make sure that the fabric is rinsed thoroughly so that any loose dye is removed

For each 500g of fabric, add about 10 litres of warm water in a suitable container  

For each 500g of fabric, add 20ml fix (1 tablespoon) to the water and stir briefly (for dark colours such as black, use twice as much fix)

Add the damp fabric and stir

Leave for 30 minutes, stirring regularly

Rinse in cold water

Dry away from direct sunlight and heat
