In the 50s Lubbock was the largest butter manufacturing center in Texas. Five cheese plants in Lubbock's trade territory use over 100,00 pounds of cheese annually. This is approximately 20% of the total cheese manufactured in Texas. Texas ranks 5th in the amount of cheese manufactured in the United States. Bell Dairy Products Plant (part of the Bell ice cream company operational from 1924 and under the Gandy brand name still in business today) is one of main dairy large plants located in Lubbock. Among other dairy products plants located in Lubbock were Wilson & Company, Swift & Company, McILHaneys, and Borden's.
