Signed: Rolle. John Rolle, 1st Baron (1750-1842) was MP for Devon. There are many statues, stained glass windows etc to John Rolle. He built New road at Beaford, Rolle canal North Devon, Rolle Quay near Barnstaple, Sea wall at Exmouth and more. He was also the subject of the the satirical poem 'The Rolliad'.
One of the more unusual moments of his life was at the coronation of Queen Victoria, when as an old man he attempted to climb the steps to her Majesty and fell over tumbling back down. The Queen rose from her throne and descended a few steps to avoid another fall (she later recorded the moment in her diary). It also led the artist John Martin to depict the event in a painting and it also appeared in a poem etc.
