DAC & Balanced Output Evolved from the 1st Generation
The Astell&Kern AK100II inherits the excellent features of the flagship AK240 and pursues thorough sound quality performance. The D/A conversion, which is the key to sound quality, uses the high-end D/A converter (DAC) IC chip “CS4398” from Cirrus Logic, which offers even higher performance. Despite its single DAC configuration, it achieves an astounding crosstalk and signal-to-noise ratio, dynamic range expansion, and low distortion in music reproduction that approaches that of the high-end AK120II (see website for measurement values). In addition to the usual 3.5mm unbalanced output terminal, a dedicated 2.5mm [balanced output] terminal is provided to further improve left-right separation and localization. The unbalanced output impedance is 2Ω, the balanced output impedance is 1Ω, the unbalanced output impedance is 2.0Vrms (L/R), and the balanced output impedance is 1.7Vrms (L/R). The dial volume control allows for fine volume adjustment, which is unique to the Astell&Kern series. Inheriting the philosophy of the first generation AK100, which became a worldwide hit, the new AK100 delivers a pure, wide-range, and powerful music experience from CD-quality to high-resolution sources.
DSD128 (5.6MHz) playback & increased CPU power
Like the AK240 (FW1.11 or later), the AK100II is capable of playing back high-resolution source files up to 384kHz/32bit (Float/Integer) PCM (up to 192kHz/24bit natively), as well as the SACD standard DSD64 (2.8MHz/1bit), an ultra DSD playback is performed by high-precision PCM conversion (176.4kHz/24bit). In order to ensure comfortable operability even during playback of high-resolution sound sources, the dual-core CPU, which has been enhanced since the first-generation AK120, is used. This ensures uninterrupted playback response during operation.
Large memory support totaling approximately 192GB & Wi-Fi streaming support
The AK100II is equipped with a large 64 GB internal memory capacity and a single exFAT microSDXC card slot with official support for up to 128 GB. This allows the AK100II to carry a total maximum capacity of approximately 192GB of sound sources, supporting the growing file size as the amount of information grows. Like the AK240, it also has Wi-Fi functionality. For home use, the AK100II can easily access and stream music files stored on a PC at the same access point with its own client software installed through a Wi-Fi wireless LAN connection. In the future, it will also be possible to purchase and download high-resolution music files directly from online music stores.
USB-DAC function, optical digital output & Bluetooth support
The AK100II is equipped with a USB-DAC function that enables playback at up to 96kHz/24bit (DSD converted to PCM). This allows the AK100II to be used as a USB-DAC with balanced output for desktop audio. The AK100II's 3.5mm unbalanced output terminal is also equipped with an optical digital output terminal, allowing the sound data in the AK100II to be output as an S/PDIF signal for connection to a stationary DAC or amplifier with built-in DAC that supports optical digital input. The AK100II is also equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 (A2DP/AVRCP) functionality, allowing wireless connection to Bluetooth-enabled speakers, headphones, car stereos, and other devices for music enjoyment.
Aluminum Housing and Tempered Glass Back
The AK100II is the result of a new design that differs from the first-generation AK100 in terms of usability and stability. The body is made of highly rigid aluminum and the back side is made of tempered glass. The operation screen features a 3.31-inch high-definition AMOLED (Active Matrix OLED) capacitive touch panel. The touch panel reduces unwanted interference from the backlight and ensures low power consumption, high visibility, and operability.
