1933 Vintage Cartoon Art Postcard Philadelphia
Amateur Radio Operator QSL Card W3DUI Classic 1930's cartoon art depicts a young lad with his headset on, sitting at a small corner desk, operating his amateur radio. (Curiously a single box with a microphone). A small bubble cloud over his head says: "Darn Glad to Work U OM!"
Through the window you can see his antenna and wire going towards the top of his building, which is an arms reach to the building next door, (as most city dwellers are familiar with). A crack in the wall shows the plaster board (nowadays everything is solid sheets of drywall). A calendar and his Operators license hangs on the wall behind him. Oddly the desk he is sitting at looks more like a safe or a box with radio dials, more than desk drawers, with the ARRL printed down the side.
"Fred G. Probst, Jr." appears to be very young, perhaps in his twenties or so, which on the date they talked, December 19, 1933, W3CPA (Whitey) turned 20. (It was his birthday).
Along the bottom front edge is printed: W2AEY PRINT
On the back (address side) the 1 cent Chicago Century of Progress Fort Dearborn Centennial Postage stamp, although applied sideways, is in good condition and not obscured by the postal marks. Postmarked DEC 20 1933 Philadelphia PA, and through the cancel lines is the word" KINGSESSING" (a neighborhood in the Southwest section of Philadelphia).
CONDITION: No pinholes. Slight wear on edges and corners, and a small ding across the top edge. Slight discoloration along the edges. there is a small "smear" along the bottom left corner of the artwork, and a small splotch along the bottom edge. The back (address side) does show some minor smudging, probably from the postal mark, or from being stored. On the right edge of the back side there is a small discoloration, we can't determine if it a smear or just dirt from being handled.
The 1 cent Chicago Century of Progress Fort Dearborn Centennial Postage stamp has slight darkening around the edges, whether smudged or just dirty, we can't tell, but the cancel lines do not overly obscure the picture.
