Small Killer Whale Orca ~ Plastic Replica ~ F0020-B22

The killer whale or orca (Orcinus orca) is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. Killer whales have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. Some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as seals and dolphins. They have been known to attack baleen whale calves, and even adult whales. Killer whales are apex predators, as there is no animal that preys on them. Killer whales are considered a cosmopolitan species, and can be found in each of the world's oceans in a variety of marine environments, from Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas—killer whales are only absent from the Baltic and Black seas, and some areas of the Arctic Ocean.

Named for Orcus, a Roman god of the underworld, killer whales or orcas (Orcinus orca) are fierce predators in the underworld of the ocean. With the sonar (known as echolocation) capabilities of a submarine and the cunning cleverness of serial killers, orca hunt in posses (better known as "pods") of up to 40 individuals, and each pod uses different techniques to kill their prey. One technique is called "carousel hunting." It involves herding schools of herring into tight circles by releasing bursts of bubbles or flashing their white bellies at the fish. With a slap of the tail, as many as 15 fish will be stunned or killed. Voila! Dinner is served. Apparently afraid of nothing, orcas will take on even great white sharks. By holding them upside down, the orcas induce "tonic immobility" which renders the sharks helpless, eventually suffocating them because if sharks cannot move, they cannot breathe. Orcas will also use suffocation to kill young whales. Pods will chase the whales until they tire and then prevent them from surfacing for air until they die. The only creatures killer whales will not take on are the very aggressive when threatened adult male sperm whales and massive adult blue whales. Other killing techniques include chumming water with regurgitated fish to lure seabirds to killer whale dinner parties, "wave-hunting" which involves creating waves to wash seals off ice floes and into the orcas' gaping maws of death, and beaching themselves to scare prey into the water where they devour their meals at their leisure. Related to dolphins, killer whales are found in every ocean in the world and in every climate. Although they have yet to be divided into separate subspecies or species, there are at least four different types of orcas known to scientists. With so much diabolical cleverness, it's a good thing killer whales aren't drawn to humans as meals. Attacks in the wild are extremely rare and never fatal. Captive whales are another story; two dozen attacks on humans have been reported since the 1970's. Some of those attacks were fatal. Perhaps these incredibly intelligent giants aren't meant to cater to the amusement of humans and should be free to swim the seas.
