BAIL SPRING INSTALLATION:

  1. Remove the bail spring cover screw and cover.
  2. Remove the bail screw on the same side as the bail spring.
  3. Remove the old bail spring.
  4. Insert the bottom of the new spring (generally the short arm) into the hole in the rotating reel head.
  5. Place the bail over the bail spring tab and insert the tab of the long arm of the bail spring into the bail.
  6. Position and hold the bail in place and screw in the bail screw.
  7. Put the bail spring cover into place and screw in the cover screw.
  8. Try the bail to determine if the installation is successful.

If the bail does not work properly, take the bail spring cover off to make sure the bottom arm is engaged. Flex the bail with this open to see if the top of the bail spring is engaged in the bail. If both of these are engaged put the bail spring cover back into place. If they are not engaged repeat the installation instructions.

If the bail spring appears to work weakly, loosen the bail screw several turns and try the bail. If the bail now works properly, the bail is sprung. A sprung bail will cause the bail and bail screw to rub on each other and reduce the free play of the bail. The bail must be sprung back into a position to allow free play of the bail.
