Brief story of Gastone Rinaldi and Thema.
During the years of his career, Rinaldi collaborated with numerous successful Italian designers, including Franco Albini, Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi, Michele De Lucchi, Ignazio Gardella, Carlo Mollino, Ico Parisi, Gio Ponti, Alberto Rosselli, Ettore Sottsass, and Marco Zanuso. Among his most important projects, we remember Rinaldi's design for the armchairs of the Piccolo theater in Milan (1998), a collaboration with Zanuso, and for the chairs of the Molinette hospital in Turin, together with the designer Mollino. Ponti's architecture magazine Domus has often published Rinaldi's works.
Rinaldi founded Thema in 1974. Both the Arianna cantilever armchair (1978-9) and the tubular Dafne (1978) were nominated for the Compasso d'Oro in 1981. Thema closed in 1989.
