Gut erhaltenes Skelett des Unterpermischen Reptiles Mesosaurus brasiliensis. Die aquatisch lebenden Tiere ernährten sich räuberisch. Interessant ist ihr Vorkommen auf dem südamerikanischen Kontinent, als auch im südlichen Afrika. Ihre Funde dienen als weiterer Beleg für die Kontinentaldrift; vor 280 Millionen Jahren waren Südamerika und Afrika noch verbunden im Urkontinent Gondwana. Das Skelett ist frei von Ergänzungen, die Platte mittig einmal geklebt und rückseitig teilweise aufgefüllt. Die Platte war im Fundzustand an dem tektonischen Riss um einige Millimeter versetzt, was seitlich an der feinschichtigen Lamellierung des Sedimentes noch erkennbar ist. Der Präparator hat offensichtlich versucht, den Versatz auf der Sichtseite der Platte durch Abschleifen der Oberfläche auszugleichen. Dadurch kommt längs zur Klebenaht an manchen Stellen schon etwas von der nächsttieferen grau gefärbten Sedimentlamelle zum Vorschein, was die Verklebung leider optisch hervorhebt. Das Fossil kam bereits vor vielen Jahren nach Europa, mittlerweile ist die Ausfuhr solcher Exponate aus Brasilien verboten.
Well preserved skeleton of the Lower Permian reptile Mesosaurus brasiliensis. The aquatic animals were predatory. Interesting is their occurrence on the South American continent, as well as in southern Africa. Their finds serve as further evidence of continental drift; 280 million years ago, South America and Africa were still connected in the supercontinent Gondwana. The skeleton is free of additions, the plate is glued once in the middle and partially filled on the back. When found, the plate was offset by a few millimeters at the tectonic crack, which can still be seen on the side from the fine-layered laminations of the sediment. The preparator obviously tried to compensate for the offset on the visible side of the plate by grinding down the surface. As a result, in some places along the glued seam, something of the next deep grey-colored sediment lamella comes to light, which unfortunately emphasizes the glueing optically. The fossil came to Europe many years ago, but the export of such exhibits from Brazil is now prohibited.
