Berg-Mahagoni wachsen zu bis 30 m hohen Laubbäumen mit Stammdurchmessern von bis zu 2 m heran. Die verholzte Frucht ähnelt im unreifen Zustand in ihrer Form einer Zigarre. Erst im Reifeprozess öffnet der Fruchtkörper seine äußere Hülle, um die großen geflügelten Samen zu entlassen und erinnert dabei stark an eine halb geschälte Banane, daher auch ihr Trivialname "Holzbanane".

Only in the ripening process does the fruit body open its outer shell to release the large winged seeds and is strongly reminiscent of a half-peeled banana, hence its common name "wood banana".
