This is a long and sleek antique dark wood weaving flying boat shuttle 17” long, marked SH #348 and M 1920-11. Complete with hardware and silver steel tips on both ends, in excellent condition. This SH-348 shuttle is a unique display piece with a rich history. Great primitive, rustic or textile décor.
The flying shuttle was
a key development in weaving in the early Industrial Revolution from 1760 to
1840. It was patented by John Kay in
1733 and greatly sped up the prior hand process. Where broad cloth looms previously required a
weaver on each side, they could now be worked with just one weaver in a new
process that was mechanized, allowing for automatic machine looms able to weave
much wider fabrics.
