Dujardin, Karel. (1622–1678)

Sleeping Dogs
Original etching, accomplished before 1678, depicting dogs sleeping on the ground; a plough, farm equipment, bunches of straw, and a fence beyond.  Etching with plate signature top right, undated (ca. 1641 - 78). Number 5 bottom right. 5.5 x 6.25 inches (140 x 155 mm), with a small margin (approx. 4 mm) around the edge of the plate. Small stains at upper edge from verso, nicks along the bottom to just within the plate, otherwise clean and very well preserved. Tipped along upper edge to support.  Dutuit 5.III; Hollstein VI.31.5.III.

According to Houbraken, the Dutch painter and printmaker Dujardin was a student of N. Berchem. Two trips to Italy, in 1640 and 1675; otherwise he lived in Amsterdam. In addition to Arcadian landscapes, he created genre scenes, historical paintings, portraits, and some 52 etchings. "An excellent painter and etcher... he turned early to the depiction of burlesque objects for the study of animals, and to the landscape scenery.... Dujardin has also supplied witty leaves, masterpieces of their kind."(Nagler 7, pp. 254–55)
