The Science

The full mechanism of our skin is a very complex inter-related system, but in every person it largely consists of two key proteins – the protein elastin, a spring like protein that gives our skin its elasticity, and the protein collagen, a fiber like protein that gives our skin its strength. These proteins are the building blocks of our skin and when they become damaged, our skin suffers, the result being tired, inelastic skin and most unfortunately, wrinkles.

Experts have reiterated that the major key to preventing the undesirable signs of skin ageing is ensuring an optimal balance in the microbiome, preventing or minimizing the damaging effects of free radicals, glycation and inflammation as well as protecting the skin barrier from the intrusion of toxic elements.

Free radicals

Free radicals, also known as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), are highly reactive oxygen molecules: the byproduct of ongoing biochemical reactions in the body.

Our bodies rely on oxygen, but normal bodily functions sometimes split paired oxygen molecules into two single atoms with unpaired electrons. These unpaired electrons scavenge around the body looking for another electron to form a stable pair which is why they are described as reactive. As they do this they cause damage to cell membranes, proteins and DNA. Among the cells that are damaged are those responsible for the production of substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid that give youthful skin its firm structure (e.g. fibroblasts and keratinocytes). Production of these substances naturally declines as we get older and oxidative stress even accelerates this process. The enemies of elastin and collagen are free radicals, electron hungry molecules that attack proteins causing them to lose shape. When free radicals come into contact with collagen or elastin proteins, they ‘steal’ electrons changing the shape of the protein, once out of shape, it can no longer serve it’s purpose - shape is everything. As we age, and as free radicals take their toll on the collagen and elastin in our skin, our skin loses its elasticity and it’s strength. Free radicals do unfortunately exist naturally within our body as a waste product of our metabolic system, but their concentrations are also increased by environmental factors such as UV, radiation, pollution, smoking and poor diet.

What is Glycation? It is the process by which sugar can cause wrinkles and sagging skin.

Simply put, glycation is the process that happens in our bodies when sugar hooks up with proteins. During biological functions, sugar is converted to energy or fuel for our bodies. But when we eat too many sugar-laden foods, the excess sugar molecules seek out proteins and fats to latch onto, creating abnormalities called Advanced Glycation End products (AGE). These AGEs cause collagen and elastin proteins in our skin to lose elasticity and weaken, resulting into sagging, dull and wrinkly skin!

The human body does not recognize AGEs as normal, and will produce antibodies that cause inflammation in the skin which does no good and the cascade continues. Effects of the glycation process at the cellular level of the skin's structure may result in wrinkling, loss of elasticity, sagging, accelerated aging and compromised barrier function.
