ZUCCHINI BLACK BEAUTY 10/20 seeds AAS Winner High Yields HEIRLOOM Courgette BUSH Squash

Cucurbita pepo

The winner of the All-American Selections (AAS) prize in 1957, this popular home garden variety produces dark green cylindrical fruit with tender cream/white flesh. Delicious flavour. Pick the flowers for stuffing or leave the fruit to grow to 15-20cm long before harvest. Enjoy the flowers stuffed and battered, or the fruit baked, grated, steamed, sautéed and sliced. Harvest in 7 weeks from transplanting.

Quick growing and incredibly productive.

Sow seeds outdoors as soon as danger of frost has past in your area. Cover seed lightly with soil, 2 - 3 seeds together in groups. Space them at least 3 m apart. For earlier ZUCCHINI (or SQUASHES) start indoors 2 to 3 weeks in advance of intended dates for moving the plants to the garden. Use Jiffy pots so the container and roots can be buried without disturbing the root system. Also make sure the pot is wet when transplanting.

Sow 2 seeds per pot and do not thin.

The seeds germinate best at 22 degree C in 7 to 10 days

Plant as you would pumpkins, in a soil enriched with compost and decomposed manure. If training to a trellis, allow vines to grow 1m before training upward. This helps to maximise space and allow for easy harvest. Insect pollinated, plants produce both male and female flowers, with bees the major pollinators in Australia. Avoid placing under insect netting which may cause reduced pollination.

ZUCCHINI and SQUASHES are ripe once the stem has reached a dark green color and is starting to wither. Ample water is needed for optimum size.
