The importance of place is evident in all of Raymond Knaub's artwork. He was born into a farming family which helped him gain a bond with the land. Harmony, wholeness, light, space and reverence for the land are adjectives Raymond uses to describe his work. Knaub's works are based on actual landscapes, but he feels no obligation to render them exactly as an illustrator would do. His work evolving over the years to reflect a deeper internal interpretation. His paintings have been referred to as Romantic Realism.

About his own work, Raymond says, "I can't say that I paint purely for myself. Painting is an emotional communication with another person. The viewer brings to the painting his or her own baggage. They interpret it the way they want. The interpretations may or may not coincide with mine, but that's all right." The viewing of the artwork engenders communication, not only with the work itself, but with the one who produced the work and with the original source of material as well. In this way, each of us learns something important about place and in turn ourselves.
