The origin of distortion, traditional distortion sound

The DS-1 was introduced in 1978 as the first BOSS distortion. It is the most popular distortion model in the current BOSS compact lineup, and has been a long-seller for many guitarists. Its iconic orange color and edgy, coarse distortion sound have been a symbol of distortion in the evolution of rock music. The origin of the distortion pedal, which has become an icon of the compact effect pedal, continues to inspire rock musicians around the world.

  • A classic distortion that has been a favorite of many professional guitarists since its introduction in 1978

  • The coarse, edgy attack prevents the distorted sound from being too muddy, making it ideal for crisp backing and soloing.

  • DIST can also be used as a booster by turning down the knob.

  • Unique tone circuitry allows for a wide range of sound shaping.

  • Highly expressive distortion that responds to different guitars, pickups, and techniques.

  • A clean sound with a clear and defined contour can be obtained by turning down the volume on the guitar side.

A distortion classic that established a genre

Before the introduction of the DS-1, distortion pedals generally produced a muddy, muffled sound when distortion was turned up, but the BOSS DS-1, released in 1978, broke that rule and produced a distortion pedal with a coarse, yet tight and rich overtone that was unique to different instruments and techniques. The DS-1 was an unprecedented distortion that did not eliminate the characteristics of different instruments and playing techniques. Musicians of the hard rock, metal, and punk genres at the height of their popularity at the time used the DS-1, and the sound that characterized these genres spread. The sound that has been passed down from generation to generation is still loved by many musicians today as a synonym for classic distortion.

Wide range of distortion sounds from mild to heavy

The simple three-tip control that has become the foundation of compact pedals can produce an extremely wide range of sounds. The DIST knob allows you to control the distortion from mild distortion for amp boosts to heavy distortion for extreme rock riffs. The DIST knob allows you to control the distortion from mild amp boosting to intense rock riffs.

Special Tone Controls

Unlike most tone controls that simply cut the highs, the DS-1 offers a wide range of control with a single TONE knob. Turning it clockwise raises the highs and cuts the lows at the same time, while turning it counter-clockwise raises the lows and cuts the highs at the same time. This unique design allows you to create everything from sharp-edged rhythm sounds to fat lead sounds with a single knob. Amps with a vintage sound often become saturated with low frequencies when distorted with a pedal, but by using the DS-1 as a booster and cutting the low frequencies appropriately, it is possible to create distorted sounds with sharp edges and tightness.
