Original Antique Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) Japanese Woodblock Print of Warrior

This is a beautiful and rare original woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi of a warrior rendered in beautiful, bright colors, with a blue-green background. Kuniyoshi was known for his work depicting warriors, and this is a fine and rare example of a warrior in a fully frontal position.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), considered one of the most famous woodblock artists and one of the last woodblock masters. The warriors and heroes Kuniyoshi continuously designed were extremely popular and gave the artist the nickname of ‘Kuniyoshi of Warrior Prints’. Dynamic bodies and stern expressions were characteristic to his warriors, lending them a powerful and strong look. The commercial success of his warriors gave Kuniyoshi the freedom to explore other subjects of ukiyo-e, such as animals, birds, flowers, beautiful women, monsters and ghosts.

Condition: Beautiful, fresh, bright colors. Good condition.  Pasted to backing. 3/4 inch tear at middle right visible in photos. Minor creases and scuffs. Please see photos for details.
