An original Boer War King's Colonials Imperial Yeomanry "D" Squadron (British African) white metal regimental cap badge in excellent condition.  The badge is an ostrich with a background of mountains and a scroll at the base inscribed "British Africa".  4.3 X 4.5 cm.  Very detailed and crisp.  Loop fittings intact.

The 4th County of London Imperial Yeomanry, known as the King’s Colonials, was created in 1901 from Colonials residing in and around London.  It was formed originally of four squadrons representing the Asian, American (Canadian), Australasian and African members of the Empire.  A fifth squadron, New Zealand, was formed in 1903 but was disbanded in 1904.

"A" Squadron (British Asian), "B" Squadron (British American)  (Canadian), "C" Squadron (Australasian), "D" Squadron (British African), "5th" Squadron (New Zealand).

The hat worn by the King’s Colonials was a slouch hat (felt hat) with a turned up left brim.  They wore three badges on their hat.  A squadron badge was worn on the front of the hat band.  A regimental badge was worn at the top of the front crown.  It was a royal coat of arms, St. Edwards crown, with the title scroll “The Kings Colonials” in brass.  A third badge displaying the initials “KC” below the Prince of Wales plumes was used to secure the turned up left brim to the side of the hat.
