The pine conefish (Monocentris japonica), also known as the knightfish or crownfish. Their distribution is limited to tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. The common name comes from the characteristically oval body covered with enlarged, spiny platelike scales, which thus resembles a pinecone. It has what appears to be a glowing smile due to the bioluminescent bacteria which inhabit the light organs found on the sides of the mouth. These symbiotic bacteria are responsible for its glow which is usually green, but occasionally red in older Pinecone Fish.
