ROBERTSON James Downie 1931-2010
Painter born in Cowdenbeath, Scotland. He studied
at Glasgow School of
Art, 1950-56 where his fellow students included Alexander
Goudie, Duncan Shanks, Alasdair Gray and Alan Fletcher, to name but a few. In
1961 Robertson held his first solo exhibition at Douglis and Foulis Gallery,
Edinburgh and in 1962 he was elected RSW and an Associate of the RSA in
1974, RSA in
1989 and RGI in
1980. From 1959 until 1999, Jimmy as he was known taught variously at Glasgow School of
Art, Gray's School of
Art, Aberdeen and at Dundee College of
Art. He was for a time President of Glasgow Art Club.
Examples of his work are represented in Glasgow Art Gallery,
the SAC and
the collections of HM Queen Elizabeth, HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and
the Duke of Edinburgh, the Lillie Art Gallery,
Milngavie. Robertson was awarded an MBE in 2009. He held a solo exhibition at
the Roger
Billcliffe Gallery, Glasgow in 2000. Several of his paintings
were auctioned a few months after his death at McTears in Glasgow.
