James Pradier (1790-1852) Sapho, 1852

Die exquisite Bronzeskulptur der antiken griechischen Dichterin Sapho stammt aus der Hand des französischen Bildhauers James Pradier (1790-1852). Er schuf 1852 die lebensgroße Vorlage aus Marmor, die sich seit 1870 im Pariser Louvre befindet.

Pradier präsentierte die Skulptur 1852 im Pariser Salon. Kurze Zeit später erwarb die renommierte Pariser Manufaktur Susse Frères Editeurs die Rechte an einer reduzierten Ausführung in Bronze. Für die Statuette, die in vier verschiedenen Größen gefertigt wurde, änderte Pradier einige Details wodurch ihre Ausstrahlung insgesamt sinnlicher und eleganter wurde. Ein Exemplar der frühen Reduktion besitzen das Musée d’Orsay sowie das Genfer MAH.

Noch im selben Jahr verstarb Pradier plötzlich, seine Sapho wurde daraufhin mit einem schwarzen Schleier verhüllt und dem Künstler posthum die Ehrenmedaille des Salons verliehen (Quelle Musée d’Orsay).

Als eine der bedeutendsten und prägendsten Geistesgrößen der Antike zählt Sappho gemeinsam mit den Philosophen Platon, Homer und Horaz zu den größten Dichtern der griechischen Klassik. Als eine der ersten Frauen ihrer Zeit gründete sie eine Schule für Mädchen, in der sie neben Tanz und Poesie auch musikalische Fächer unterrichtete.

Die vorliegende Bronze zeigt die für Susse Frères typische, sehr gute Qualität in feiner Ausführung und wunderbarer Patinierung: Alters- und gebrauchsbedingt ist die ursprüngliche Patinierung etwas ungleichmäßig. Ansonsten sehr schöner Originalzustand. Seitlich gegossene Marke der Signatur „J. Pradier" sowie die Marke der Gießerei.

Die Manufaktur  Susse Frères Editeurs-Paris begann bereits früh                         zeitgenössische Künstler zu verlegen. Allein für James Pradier führte sie 24 Arbeiten aus.  Seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert arbeiteten sie mit verschiedenen, sehr renommierten Pariser Gießereien zusammen und machten sich schnell einen Namen für die exzellente Qualität ihrer Bronzegüsse.

Sapho by James Pradier (1790-1852)

The exquisite bronze sculpture of the ancient Greek poetess Sapho is from the hand of the French sculptor James Pradier (1790-1852). He created the life-size marble model in 1852, which has been in the Louvre in Paris since 1870.

Pradier presented the sculpture at the Paris Salon in 1852. A short time later, the renowned Parisian manufactory Susse Frères Editeurs acquired the rights to a reduced version in bronze. For the statuette, which was produced in four different sizes, Pradier changed some details, making its overall appearance more sensual and elegant. A copy of the early reduction is held by the Musée d'Orsay and the Geneva MAH.

Pradier died suddenly the same year, his Sapho was then covered with a black veil and the artist was posthumously awarded the Salon's Medal of Honor (source Musée d'Orsay).

One of the most important and formative intellectual figures of antiquity, Sapho ranks with the philosophers Plato, Homer, and Horace among the greatest poets of the Greek classical period. She was one of the first women of her time to found a school for girls, where she taught musical subjects in addition to dance and poetry.

The present bronze shows the very good quality typical of Susse Frères, with a fine finish and wonderful patination: due to age and use, the original patination is somewhat uneven. Otherwise very nice original condition. Laterally cast mark of the signature "J. Pradier as well as the mark of the foundry.

The Susse Frères Editeurs-Paris manufactory began publishing contemporary artists early on. It executed 24 works for James Pradier alone. Since the early 19th century, they worked with several very prestigious Parisian foundries and quickly made a name for the high quality of their bronze castings.

I enjoy beautiful things and it is my greatest pleasure to find them, to lure them into their stories, to spend time with them and then set them free again. Add to that a passionate interest in exceptional and high crafted objects. They radiate joie de vivre, astonish or enchant us; make a collector's heart beat faster or become good friends and a meaningful place in your lives. They may be bulky or controversial, but they are never boring. I believe the stories, the hands, and the tradition behind the objects are equally as important as their aesthetic qualities. Antique objects can adds so much value to your life, and I personally cannot imagine a home without it. Each piece in my shop has been thoughtfully and personally chosen.
