WW2 German DLV Glider Proficiency Badge

Description

WW2 German DLV Glider Proficiency Badge made from a silver bullion wire on a luftwaffe blue backing.

The DLV, or Deutsche Luftsports Verband (German Air Sports Organisation) was founded in March 1933 at the behest of Hermann Goring. Since the Treaty of Versailles prohibited Germany from having an air force, the DLV became a cover for training the future Luftwaffe. In fact, much of their insignia was similar to that which the Luftwaffe eventually adopted. The DLV Glider Proficiency Badge was instituted in three levels - A, B, and C. This badge is the Glider Pilot 'C' Level Proficiency Badge. To qualify for this award, the recipient had to pass an initial entrance test followed by a stringent flight test and exam. This badge is the most senior of the three levels of glider proficiency. These impressive replicas are made from a blue luftwaffe wool backing, with the award design made from a silver bullion wire.
